Inside a VTEC Solenoid Assembly

If you ever wondered what’s inside a VTEC Solenoid assembly then here you go. I cleaned mine out from my D16Z6 engine and snapped a few pictures for reference.  As you can see in my pictures below my pressure switch has a broken plug socket so I will have to replace that before I mount it back on my engine. The pressure switch gives the go ahead to the ECU when the oil pressure is high enough to engage VTEC. Once the ECU sends the signal to the VTEC Solenoid it opens a valve and feeds oil to the VTEC Assembly, this engages a higher torque cam lobe and gives you more power.

  1. Yea, the vtec solenoid (located next to the distributor and not far from the egr) likes to rust up a bit. Cleaning it with those pads won’t hurt it. It’s kind of like an oil pressure switch. There is oil inside it and when you take the whole solenoid assembly off the side of the cylinder head, there is a rubber gasket and a mesh screen to catch debris. Mine had 226k miles on it and had nothing caught in the mesh. Are you talking about the air conditioning system when you refer to the aluminum canister? Thanks

I can remember in my younger years when I used to do the things you are doing today. My real love was fixing up old Chevy trucks. It’s not that I don’t enjoy doing this anymore, I just don’t have the time. Thanks for sharing, especially the pictures revealing the inner works of the solenoid.

hey thank you for the exploded view of the vtec solenoid…im taking mine apart to clean it and change my gaskets as it was leaking anyway..i have a question when i put that metal plug with a hole in it on the top before the solenoid. does it need to face a certain way?

  7. I don’t think so, I didn’t see a difference between either side so i don’t think it matters which way it goes.

  8. Hi anyone, I have a niggle… Yahoo roadmaps keeps starting up up on it’s own in background and taking loads of battery with it. For example, yesterday I took it off charge and it was sat idle with all the screen blanked for about 4 hours. When I flicked it on I was amazed to determine that the battery was only 50% complete which can be negative even to the x10! When I looked at what was running, I observed Moxier mail (no surprises there) and Yahoo Roadmaps.

  9. reboot your phone and is possible reload your firmware.
