Knowing how the internal combustion engine works is the basic concept that all back yard mechanics should know before they begin any kinda of performance mods. But not everyone is a wiz kid when it comes down to the details on pistons and valves so I thought i would do a search on the web and share this great writeup from Honda Tuning that explains everything in great detail. D16Z6 is a Solid Engine for Building Turbo Power
Posted On 30 Jul 2008 By Bart Piotrowski. Under: D Series Engine, D16, Engine Info.
The D16Z6 engine is a great engine to build for turbo applications because of the following reasons:
- Z6 Oil Pumps are solid
- Ease of Tuning as it's made for the OBD1 ECU
- Top end power is great for turbo builds
- Crank is good up to 600HP
- P08 Cylinder Head with VTEC
Although It can handle up to 200-220HP in stock form if you go beyond this limit, it is advisable to upgrade the valve train, pistons and connecting rods. So if your gonna build a (SOHC) Single Over Head Cam engine, start with the best go with the D16Z6. They are found in 1992-1995 Honda Civic EX and Si models, and also the 1993-1995 Honda Delsol Si

Timing Gears, Belts and more
Posted On 15 May 2008 By Bart Piotrowski. Under: Civic, Cylinder Head, Engine Info, Timing Belt, Valve Train.
The most common cause of Honda engines getting rebuilt is the infamous timing belt breaking. When your engine is running, the bottom half (block, crankshaft, and pistons) and top half (cylinder head, Valves, springs and retainers) are synchronized to make sure that the valves don't hit the pistons. When the timing belt breaks the top half (valve train) stops working and some valves maybe left in such a position that when the pistons comes back up to TDC (TOP DEAD CENTER) they make contact. The piston is much stronger then the valves so usually what happens is that the valves get bent in the valve guides and you may have a good mark left in the top of the piston from the valve head.
If you would like to know more about this subject I found a great post at D-Series forums today that describes everything in detail. Click Here for link. ... Read More
Where Do All These Hoses Go?
Posted On 16 Jan 2008 By Bart Piotrowski. Under: D Series Engine, Engine Info, Great Resources, Maintenance and Do It Yourself, Vacuum Diagrams.
Sometimes if your doing a swap or you take the engine apart and you forgot to mark where the vacuum hoses go it's hard to figure it out. So to double check that all my hoses are in the right places I searched for a vacuum hose layout for my car and found one for both the D15B7 and D16Z6 or D16a which is what I swap in.
