Fish Tank Water Changed and Back into Warhammer 40K

Just writing up a quick post that I changed my water in my 125 gallon Turtle tank as my fish were swimming sideways last night so I knew I HAD to do it today.

I’ve been spending more time these days getting back into Warhammer 40 figurine painting and collecting so I created some pages about them on my blog. My main one that has some content and will be getting lots of love this weekend is my Space Wolves page. Space Wolves are a Chapter of the Space Marines in the Warhammer 40 Universe. So I decided to create a page and share what I know to people who are looking for good info. Check it out Click Here.

I even created some videos on this hobby and should have more coming soon.

Movies, Fish Tank and XP4 Filter Cleaning and New Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

The long weekend was very busy for me so I didn’t have time to write some new content so here’s some updates.

After seeing Grown Ups at the theater, the next day I rented Hot Tub Time Machine and then the following day I saw a horror called The Crazies. Hot Tub Time Machine was pretty funny and i give it a 7.5/10 and Crazies was decent so I rank it 6.5/10

On Monday I cleaned my LOOOOONG overdue xp4 filters which were embarrassingly very dirty. I replaced the Bio-Chem Zorb and floss pads in both filters but the bottom foam only in one filter that needed it. I also change some of the water in the tank as it was very dirty. I will watch my ammonia in the next few days toward the weekend and possibly change some more water if the ammonia gets too high.

I also upgraded my Phone from an iPhone 3G to a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as I got a super deal from my cell phone carrier. Rogers also sent me one of those 3G Internet Rocket Sticks which I still need to test out. Soon as I have some time to play with both I’ll do a review on them.

Tonight I created a new D16Z6 Exhaust video on Youtube and added it to my right side column so check it out when you get a chance.

I Cleaned My Rena XP4 Main Turtle Filter Today

I cleaned my main turtle filter today the Rena XP4 but it was cleaner then I thought. The only reason that  I can see it being so clean was that I found a kink in the hose going into the filter, so it wasn’t sucking as much water as it was suppose to so it was filtering a lot less. So once I cleaned it, I returned it to it’s location under the aquarium and made sure the hoses were not kinked anymore.

Here are the steps that I took to cleaning my filter

Step 1 - I rinsed out a new BioZorb chemical pouch under cold water for 2-3 minutes till it was almost clean water running through it.

Step 2 - I disconnected the filter from power and used the quick release handle to remove the filter from under the aquarium and put it into my sink

Step 3 - I opened the filter, put the motor head in the sink and took out all the media baskets into a pail

Step 4 - I drained all the old water and cleaned the inside of the filter canister with a scotch pad sponge then rinsed it.

Step 5 - I cleaned the bottom basket and foam inserts one by one

Step 6 - I cleaned the other 2 baskets with Bio Rings by gently running cold water over them and shaking the basket

Step 7 - I cleaned the top basket and discarded the old BioZorb pouch and the old floss pad

Step 8 - I inserted the new rinsed BioZorb pouch and floss pad into the top basket

Step 9 - Once all the baskets were clean I inserted them into the canister filter housing and cleaned the motor

Step 10 - I made sure all the baskets were all aligned and added water to the filter, once the water was at the top I quickly closed the motor on to the canister

Step 11 - I closed all the latches on the motor and made sure it was nice and tight

Step 12 - I took a towel and wiped any excess water of the filter sides and hooked the filter back on

Step 13 -I plugged the filter back on and WAALAA its back to filtering my aquarium

Step 14 - I then cleaned up and I was done so spent I 10 minutes enjoying your turtles and fish

Below is a picture of the XP4 filter and how the water circulates through the canister.

Don’t Cook Your Fish in a Heat Wave

The temperatures in the Lower Mainland have been in the mid 30′s for the past 2 weeks and it’s causing the water in fish tanks to heat up. So today I decided to change the water in both my tanks and pour in some cold water to even out the temperatures to 78-80 degrees. I know the temperature will still climb up over time, but at least there will be more oxygen in the water for the fish now.  Some of my fish are getting bigger every month as are my turtles in my 125 Gallon tank. My crayfish SuperTank is still kicking well and cruising around my 29 Gallon tank regularly, he hasn’t molted for a while but I think he should in the next few months. My baby angel fish is now the size of a loonie and growing nicely.

New Ceramic Heat Lamp, Algae Wafers, and Shrimp Pellets

I stopped by Pet land after work today and picked up a 100watt heat lamp to replace the heat bulb they broke last night. This ceramic one should have a longer life span and also not burst when cold water hits it as I suspect that’s what happened to my other bulb by one of the turtles. While I was there I also picked up some algae wafers and shrimp pellets as I was out of both of them. I give the wafers to my Plecos every other day or a few times a week to cut down on over feeding them. The shrimp pellets are for my crayfish and my small algae eaters. These particular shrimp pellets are good for keeping your tank cleaner as they don’t make as much mess as some other brands while they get consumed.

After screwing in the ceramic heat lamp I changed the water in the turtle tank.  This water change was larger then usual as I wanted to suck out as much of the old water as possible and any bottom debre using my gravel cleaner.

Oh My, Broken Heat Bulb?

OH MY!

I was just about to go to sleep when I noticed some funny looking things on the bottom of my turtle tank. I looked closer and I was like what the heck, there are pieces of glass in the tank. I looked around and was confused, how did pieces of glass get into my aquarium. Then I looked up and I saw the turtle heat bulb all broken and not working. I quickly disconnected the power and grabbed my net and started to scoop all the glass out of the tank. I got it all out and tomorrow I will do a water change and make sure there is no more there. I think the the bulb must of been really hot and the turtle splashed some water at it and it exploded. I tell yeah turtles are like kids they get into lots of trouble. :D

Sunday XP4 Filter Cleaning and Some Water Changes

I took the day of work today to heal an eye infection so I had some extra time on my hands and decided to get the water changed in my 29 and 45 gallon tanks and also to clean my main filter in my 125 gallon turtle tank.

The water changes were easy as usual but I noticed that my 45 gallon tank had a hint of green water while draining so I suspect an algae bloom in that tank. I also noticed that the glass had traces of algae on it so I cleaned it with scratch pad. One of the bulbs that I have in my T5 light is meant for plant growth so I might pull that out and see if that helps curb the algae growth.

The 29 Gallon tank was really easy to clean and while cleaning it I was wondering if maybe in the next little while I should get another crayfish. If I do get another crayfish I think I will get a rainbow one like before.

The main XP4 turtle filter cleaning was needed as the inside of it was really dirty but that’s expected as it wasn’t cleaned since October 24, 2008. Now this is very long for a filter not to be cleaned but as there are 2 filters hooked up to the turtle tank and I did change the water in the mean time it’s still not that bad. But I will try to keep the maintenance of the filters and water changes more regular to keep my pets happy.

Neglecting Your Filter Maintenance is Not an Option

I finally got around to cleaning both my XP3 filters for the 29 and the 45 gallon tanks. The 45 gallon XP3 filter was changed not to long ago but the 29 gallon has been running since October which is way too long. With this years winter being so snowy I just stayed home and played World of Warcraft which made me very lazy when it came to my filter maintenance and water changes. I will create a schedule for the filter cleaning and water changes and try to keep on top of this from now on. It only took about 30 mins to clean each filter which was way faster then I remember as I haven’t done it for a while.

Addiction to Warcraft Was Paused For A Day

It’s 8 days into 2009 and as you can see this is my first post as I have been so busy playing World of Warcraft for the past 2 weeks I’ve been lacking on posting anything on my blogs. It’s so hard to step back from playing video games when your having so much fun but sometimes you just need to step back and get back into reality and take care of those other tasks and duties that need taking care off.

Yesterday I did take a break from World of Warcraft and changed the water in my 29 Gallon and the 45 Gallon fish tank. In the past few months my fish tanks have been doing very well with very few fatalities and all the fish seem to be getting along great. Turtles are getting bigger and bigger and they seem very healthy and happy. I had to throw away a big bunch of the duckweed in my 29 and 45 gallon as the top of the water was so full of duckweed that it was starting to limit the light to the rest of the tank. Duckweed is a good turtle food but it grows so fast that you might need to throw some away if the top of your water is full of it.

New T5 Light and Glass Cover

I finally gave in last Friday and purchased a 48″ Dual T5 light and a dual glass cover for my 45 gallon aquarium. I had the old T8 style fluorescent system before and it wasn’t lighting up the aquarium properly so now the T5 is in and the T8 is out. I was also using a piece of plexiglass to cover my 2nd half of my 45 gallon aquarium but now it’s all glass and looks a lot better.

I also picked up the largest available floating turtle dock that same day as both my turtles are submerging the ones that they now, so this should fix the issue.  I haven’t had a chance to install it yet but some time this week it will be done.

Yesterday I picked up the 2nd Expansion pack to World of Warcraft called Wrath of the Lich King and from last nights 4 hour game play, it looks good. I don’t plan to play everyday but it will be a nice change of pace when I am not working on my fish tanks or other hobbies.
